Dodgers Rumors: What Los Angeles can receive from trading Yasiel Puig
By Jason Reed
A deal very similar to the last one, the Dodgers here would be getting additions in both the starting pitching and the bullpen. However, unlike the last deal, the starting pitcher they are receiving is a huge upgrade and could make them World Series favorites. With the Pirates out of contention, they may be best pressed to cash out on the surprise that was Ivan Nova.
The Dodgers have to give up a little bit prospect wise in Jordan Sheffield, but it is nothing to turn heads over. Sheffield is the Dodgers eighth best prospect, and quite frankly, does have some great upside. MLB Pipeline drew comparisons to Tom Gordon and Marcus Stroman, showing that Sheffield can be a solid contributor at the MLB level.
That, alongside Yasiel Puig and a young arm like Brock Stewart, should be more than enough to convince the Pirates of this deal. This deal allows Pittsburgh to cash out on Andrew McCutchen as well, who has been in some trade rumors for quite some time now. Puig would serve this team perfectly, acting as the bridge from now into the future of Austin Meadows and company.
Overall, Nova and his 3.24 ERA would be very welcome in Dodger Stadium. Again, Nova would perhaps produce even better than that for the Dodgers, making him a reliable third option behind Clayton Kershaw and Alex Wood. Nova would give the Dodgers the depth they need for the postseason, something they previously haven’t had.
Sprinkle in a solid relief arm in Tony Watson and this deal would be great for Los Angeles. While that hole in right would be present again, it may be worth it.
