Fans of Major League Baseball actually saw a deal very similar to this one last season. At the halfway point of the year the San Diego Padres dealt thriving pitcher Drew Pomeranz to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Anderson Espinoza. Espinoza, a right-handed pitcher, was the 39th ranked prospect heading into 2016.

Pomeranz was a good success story. He was young, likable, and finally was seeming to put it together. While Nova may not have that same youth, he also is a bounce back player that has been fairly successful in 2017. With two more seasons after 2017 under contract and only $17 million owed, Nova is a great starting pitching option that is relatively cheap.

That is what makes Nova the same value wise as Pomeranz was last season. San Diego was able to bring in the 39th best prospect for Pomeranz and the Pirates should look to do the same. Ironically, Yadier Alvarez is the 39th ranked prospect in baseball. While some Dodger fans are in love with the kid, it may be time to say our goodbyes.

The fact of the matter is that although Alvarez does have a lot of promise, he has struggled in Advanced-A ball this season. Granted, that is no reason to give up on him, but it is time for the Dodgers to pull the trigger on their farm system. The chances have never been this high, and I promise the Dodgers won’t be missing Alvarez if Nova helps bring in that World Series.
