9. Kenley Jansen’s immaculate inning – May 18 vs. Miami Marlins

Kenley Jansen has been a monster for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. Jansen holds a 0.96 ERA, is a perfect 21 for 21 in saves and has struck out 57 batters while only walking two. In 36 appearances Jansen has only allowed more than one hit four times and has pitched more than one inning nine times.

Jansen has the second best ERA of pitchers with more than 30 innings pitched, only behind Pittsburgh’s Felipe Rivero. Of all relievers with more than 30 innings, Jansen ranks first in K/BB ratio, striking out 28.50 batters for every batter he walks. The next best mark is almost half of that in Roberto Osuna’s 15.67 K/BB.

This domination was showcased on May 18 against the Miami Marlins when Jansen accomplished a feat that had only been done 78 times before, throw an immaculate inning. There have been over 3.8 million innings pitched in the history of the MLB, meaning that this happens only .002% of the time.

For those of you that do not know what an immaculate inning is, it is when a pitcher strikes out the side on just nine pitches. Jansen accomplished that against the Marlins when he struck out Derek Dietrich, JT Riddle and Ichiro Suzuki in the ninth inning.

What makes it even more impressive is that Jansen struck out JT Realmuto to end the eighth on five pitches. In all, Jansen threw 14 pitches, 13 of which were strikes. This was the first immaculate inning thrown by a Dodgers since Todd Worrell’s in August of 1995.
