SS Gavin Lux (Ranked sixth)

I love Gavin Lux as much as the next guy, I really do. The long-term plan for Lux seemed to be to draft him and have him burst into the league at shortstop as Corey Seager makes his eventual switch to third base. Seager has seemingly gotten better at fielding shortstop, and with Justin Turner signing a four-year deal, Lux’ new target could have been second base.

However, ahead of him at second base is Willie Calhoun. Calhoun is tearing the cover off the ball in AAA Oklahoma City and seems to be the man to replace Logan Forsythe once his contract is up after 2018. That is one guy that shouldn’t be touched in the Dodgers farm system. He has a future purpose and is ranked as the third best prospect for the Dodgers on MLB Pipeline.

Back to Lux. He is ranked sixth in the Dodgers farm system, likely just missing out on the top 100 prospects list. As guys get called up and Lux gets better there is no doubt he will crack the top 100, likely making it before next season. However, despite this and despite being the Dodgers first round pick in 2016, it would make more sense to deal the middle infielder.

The Dodgers are no strangers to dealing their first round picks as they parted ways with 2014 first round pick Grant Holmes in the deal that brought in Rich Hill and Josh Reddick.

Lux alone would not be enough to entice a great return, but he could be included in a package that can land Los Angeles a left-handed relief arm. With Los Angeles reportedly willing to shop Romo and Morrow for southpaws, Lux being traded makes even more sense.
