First, it gets the Lakers immediate help in scoring, experience, leadership, and other categories they need help with that may not be filled by their rookie hero. Also, they can help Cleveland by delivering on a solid big man in return.
Second, the conversations Magic Johnson likes to have about the Lakers being great again mean nothing if they flop. Winning a Summer League title doesn’t guarantee a single win in the regular season. If Los Angeles falls on their face, which they could easily do, not trading for Kyrie Irving would be a thing they’ll regret for a long time.
Third, why wait when the time to take over the crown is now? All sorts of teams are fighting for their lives and their own respectability with the type of dominance the Warriors are delivering on.
Los Angeles has the most storied franchise in league history, yet it’s somehow managed to keep out of the contention conversation all of this time.
