As cool as it would be to see a backcourt consisting of Kyrie Irving and Lonzo Ball, it likely won’t happen. First of all, the Lakers do not have many pieces to give for Irving without leaving a significant hole. Sure, they could deal Brandon Ingram for Irving, but there is no real reason for the Cavs to bring Ingram in to sit behind LeBron.

That leaves Ball as Los Angeles’ only real trade chip for Irving, which does not make a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. The Lakers would be much wiser to just hold on to what they have instead of dealing Ball. Some have floated around trading Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle, and while that would be worth it, there is no chance that Cleveland would take that deal, ever.

Could Irving still become a Laker somehow? Sure, never say never in today’s NBA. However, the Los Angeles Clippers have a much better shot at bringing in Irving. Los Angeles could part ways with DeAndre Jordan and their pieces from Houston for Irving. However, again, this would likely never happen.

Realistically, Irving will likely find a home in New York, Minnesota, San Antonio or Miami. Miami and New York don’t make that much sense, as they would have to give up stars and would essentially put Irving on a pretty bad team. The Spurs would be great, but they don’t have much to offer; leaving the Timberwolves as the most likely destination for Irving.
