Dodgers: Latest prospect update sees multiple Dodgers climb the ranks
By Jason Reed
MLB Pipeline just recently released their annual midseason prospect update. For the Dodgers, this update saw some big leaps from some big names.
Every season we can count on a multitude of outlets producing their top 100 prospect rankings, predicting just how the brightest young talents in baseball will pan out. MLB performs their own rankings, ranked by MLB Pipeline, that not only ranks the top 100 prospects in baseball but the top 30 for every single team.
The Dodgers have had some familiar faces on this list that have ranked fairly well. Cody Bellinger was 13th before this season began, Corey Seager and Julio Urias were first and fourth before 2016, respectively, and Joc Pederson was ranked 13th before his 2015 rookie campaign.
For the most part, any everyday fan can look at this list and generate a baseline understanding in which young talents will be good in the future. Sure, there are some guys that never quite pan out, but even the worst top prospects turn into decent young players.
A great example of this is Byron Buxton of the Twins. Buxton was the number one prospect in baseball in both 2014 and 2015 before falling to the second spot in 2016. Now, Buxton has played in 222 games and has only hit for a .219 average. Not great, but he is still just 23 and has shown flashes of greatness.
Now, as the season is coming into August when the rosters expand, MLB Pipeline updated their rankings. The Dodgers fared pretty well in this update as multiple talents saw a big leap. Here is a look at the six Dodgers prospects that landed in the top 100, and how they compared to the preseason rankings.
