Dodgers: Latest prospect update sees multiple Dodgers climb the ranks
By Jason Reed
Willie Calhoun is a staple of the Oklahoma City Dodgers and is the fourth best prospect in the Dodgers system. Calhoun is undoubtedly already big league ready and we may see him make the roster when they expand come playoff time. This would be a great chance for Calhoun to get his feet wet like Pederson and Seager did when the rosters expanded in 2014 and 2015.
Personally, Calhoun may be my favorite prospect in the team’s entire system. This season in AAA Calhoun has embraced the talent jump and has actually played better. In 93 games played the young second baseman has a .300 batting average, 22 home runs and 65 runs batted in.
Calhoun has played 11 games in left field, with many baseball analysts predicting left as his path to the majors. His fielding as second base is okay at best, and with Logan Forsythe in LA through 2018, there is no real spot for Calhoun at second. The move to left field would be best suited.
It is ironic as well as Calhoun reminds me of a slightly smaller, yet more powerful Andrew Toles. They are practically the same build (Calhoun 5’8″, 187 pounds – Toles 5’9″, 192 pounds), with Toles holding the speed advantage and Calhoun holding the power advantage.
However, with people in front of him at both second and left, there is a chance that Calhoun may be the biggest trade chip for the deadline.
