The famed infield of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey played their first full season together and two shrewd trades proved the catalyst leading to the pennant.
The club led the NL in hits and home runs while placing second in batting avg. and on-base percentage. The pitching staff led the league in ERA and strikeouts, while the bullpen was led by Mike Marshall who set a major league record with 106 appearances winning 15 and getting 21 saves en route to a Cy Young Award.
In the NLCS the Dodgers manhandled the Pittsburgh Pirates winning the clinching game 4 12-1, but once they got to the World Series the Dodgers faltered in a five game series loss to the Oakland Athletics.

The 2017 Dodgers are on pace for 113 wins which would shatter the standard set by the 1974 and 1962 Dodgers. But wins may not be enough with this team, to truly be among the great Dodgers teams this year’s Dodgers may need to break the 29 year World Series drought.
