Lakers Rumors: Three Reasons why it is unwise to trade Jordan Clarkson
By Jason Reed
The latest Lakers rumors have spelled Jordan Clarkson’s potential departure from the team. However, despite these reports, the Lakers have every reason to keep the young guard.
First, it was Lou Williams, then it was D’Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov. Now, the next potential trade chip in the Lakers’ hand is young guard Jordan Clarkson. Clarkson is one of the Lakers most valuable trade chips, as his youth and talent spell a great player in the making.
However, Clarkson is owed $37.5 million over the next three seasons, one season removed from signing a four-year, $50 million deal. This makes Clarkson the fourth highest paid player in the Lakers organization, and after Brook Lopez and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope become free agents next offseason, Clarkson will be the second highest paid player.
Because of the team’s desire to rebuild with superstars, Clarkson becomes the next man to go. His talent will give him value, allowing the Lakers to give away his contract without serious repercussions. According to Eric Pincus over at Bleacher Report, this has turned from mere fan speculation to a real possibility.
"One person within the organization who isn’t permitted to speak publicly on the subject told Bleacher Report the team is confident it can move Clarkson if needed to open space."
Whether or not it happens is yet to be seen. However, the fact that the organization is even considering the deal says something; they are all in on this superstar plan and don’t care what talent they need to give up. They need cap space.
Although, trading Jordan Clarkson may not be in the best interest for the Los Angeles Lakers. The team has other paths to open up cap space, therefore, here are three reasons why the Lakers would be unwise to trade Jordan Clarkson.
