Lakers Rumors: Superstar targets that could be Plan B if not Paul George
By Jason Reed
Instead of opting for a scoring forward such as Paul George, the Lakers could go back to their roots and acquire a dominant center. That center, DeMarcus Cousins, will fit in nicely with the history of the Lakers. Look at every successful Lakers team, they all have a great center to lead the way.
While Cousins certainly is no Shaquille O’Neal or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, he would give the Lakers a dynamic they are currently missing. Brook Lopez will serve as a nice rental option, but he is not worth the money he is being paid. Because of this, the Lakers will be back with Ivica Zubac starting at center. No offense to Zubac, but he isn’t really “dominant”.
Having Lopez actually helps this partnership formulate. With the team sold on Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram being the future, if Lopez gels nicely with them they will look to pull in a similar asset. Cousins is similar in the way that he can shoot the basketball, providing more physicality and rebounding prowess than Lopez.
This doesn’t stem from nowhere, either. Cousins was reportedly interested in joining the Lakers before getting trading to the New Orleans Pelicans. Now, with his contract set to expire after this season, he could have his shot to go back to California.
The best part about bringing in Cousins? It allows the team to add another star at shooting guard or forward, without causing a log jam.
