Outfielder Curtis Granderson is the latest player to be acquired by the Dodgers.

After beating the Detroit Tigers Friday night to push their league leading record to 86-34, the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly involved in a trade that will bring outfielder from the New York Mets to the Dodgers.  Reports began coming out over Twitter from journalists, before the team officially tweeted out the transaction.

A detailed tweet said the Granderson and cash considerations were being traded to the Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. This means the Dodgers may not be sending a player and only money.

There will be lots of speculation just who the player could be going back to the Mets. There has been a glut in the outfield for quite a few years, but injuries to Andre Ethier, Scott Van Slyke, and Andew Toles meant that Chris Taylor an infielder was converted into an outfielder this season.

With Van Slyke gone in a trade, Ethier continuing to rehab his injury and Toles out for the season even with Taylor the outfield depth became depleted.

Taylor has been outstanding and been one of the unsung MVP type players leading the Dodgers success. Adding Granderson means that manager Dave Roberts will have plenty options to play with during the home stretch to the playoffs.

Granderson started the year in a terrible slump just .128/.174.221 in April, since May 1st Granderson has been hitting at a  .266/.384/.570 clip that translates to a wRC+ around 148 which is where Cody Bellinger has been in that time as well.

As a group the Dodgers outfield has hit .243 this season good for the bottom five in Major League Baseball, Granderson can help bring that up if he continues to hit as well as he has. Despite a low batting average overall (.228) Granderson’s power numbers are still up.  Granderson has 19 home runs 52 runs batted in, the home runs would be tied for third on the Dodgers with Corey Seager.

Granderson, at 36 years old, also brings another veteran presence to the team seeking it’s first World Series win in 29 years.  Granderson has been through many playoff wars in his career with the Tigers, New York Yankees, and Mets.

He was also part of two World Series teams in the 2006 Tigers and 2015 Mets.  In 2015, Granderson helped eliminate the Dodgers in the NLDS hitting .389 while driving in 7 runs, in the World Series he would hit 3 home runs.

This move is similar to the moves the Dodgers have made in the past during the waiver trade deadline, in 2015 they acquired veteran Chase Utley, and last year it was veteran catcher Carlos Ruiz. Both had extensive playoff experience like Granderson.

With the team playing at such a high clip every night it’s hard to imagine this team needing more help, but as October pasts have shown the more depth a team has the more chances a team gives themselves to succeed, it looks like for the Dodgers the rich just keep getting richer.
