Dodgers prospect profile: O’Koyea Dickson deserves a Major League call up
By Jason Elbaum
The Los Angeles Dodgers are widely regarded to have one of the best farm systems in baseball. O’Koyea Dickson has quietly become a huge bright spot in the stacked farm.
With just a few weeks left in the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City Dodgers season, LA Sports Hub will be highlighting some Dodger prospects who showcased their skills this season and could be receiving a call-up to the big league club in the near future. Let’s get familiar with outfielder and first baseman O’Koyea Dickson.
O’Koyea Dickson was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round of the 2011 MLB Draft and has gradually propelled himself to the cusp of making The Show. He has played 114 games for the Oklahoma City Dodgers this season, playing all three outfield positions and occasionally making an appearance at first base.
At 5’11” and 250 pounds, Dickson combines a compact swing with a stocky build to maintain excellent power numbers. His batting average and slugging percentage regressed from a season ago, but he has already eclipsed his home run and RBI totals from last season.
This past season in Oklahoma City, Dickson has hit 24 home runs and knocked in 74 runs while hitting a career-low .247. It’s important to note that Dickson was coming off of a season where he hit a career-best .328, so Dodger fans can hope that his inefficiency was a fluke. These numbers have been good enough for 7th in the Pacific Coast League in home runs and in the top 20 in RBIs with a few weeks left in the season.

Dickson has hit double-digit home runs in each of his seven seasons since being drafted by the Dodgers, and his continually improving power swing could force Dodger manager Dave Roberts to start including him in his rotation of outfielders next season.
The 27-year-old outfielder doesn’t get the recognition he deserves because he has been with the organization so long, that scouts are more focused on the younger assets the Dodgers possess. However, Dickson has always been included in the Dodgers spring training squad and doesn’t waste his opportunities to showcase his skills in front of top management.
O’Koyea Dickson could benefit from a big league call-up so he can gain more consistency with his swing while working with Dodgers hitting coach, Turner Ward. He clearly possesses the raw skills to be an excellent power hitter in the big leagues, he just needs to adjust to big league pitching and cut down on strikeouts.

The biggest issue surrounding Dickson’s call-up is that the Dodgers possess so many talented outfielders that Dave Roberts has trouble selecting the best three to play on a given day. It’s a high-quality problem to have, but it adversely affects a Dodger prospect who has patiently waited his turn.
