LA Sparks are fighting for the best record in the WNBA
The LA Sparks once more are challenging to be the best team in the WNBA. Coming off of a championship, Los Angeles looks poised to repeat.
In the 2016-17 season, the LA Sparks were just about in the same spot, made the playoffs and won the WNBA Finals.
You ask who is the top team in the WNBA standings right now? Well, that would be the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx were the top team in the league last year before they lost to LA.
Both teams are in similar spots and they have been here before. History repeats itself and may repeat itself this year. Minnesota has played one more game than LA. Hence, LA is 1.5 games back to share the top spot in the league.

The Sparks have two games left and they can end up with the best record in the WNBA. All they need to do is win out and the Lynx to lose out, it is possible but not realistic. They traveled in the correct direction by defeating the San Antonio Stars.

The LA Sparks would love to have the best record in the WNBA. However, they are content with having the second best record. In the end, the main goal is to win the WNBA Finals again.
Ironically, the WNBA can have a WNBA Finals rematch between the Sparks and Lynx, since they have the two best records in the league. Both teams have had surprise losses.
However, we could even see different teams in the WNBA Finals, if the teams currently in the playoffs officially make it in.
For example, one scenario is the Sparks could lose to the Dallas Wings and the Lynx could lose to the Seattle Storm. If this were to happen that would shake up the post-season. Additionally, it would make good television for the league and we would see a new WNBA Finals winner.
Once again reality sets in and as of now it looks to be as if a WNBA Finals rematch will happen. Let us not forget how unstoppable Los Angeles and Minnesota look in the postseason.
