Pick Analysis. ESPN Rank: Third on Rams, 27th in QB. 4. player. 51. Scouting Report. QB. Jared Goff

The reason Jared Goff’s ranking takes a hit in compared to the ESPN ranking is simple, he is yet to prove himself as a viable starting option. ESPN ranks these players based on how many points they will contribute. Because Goff is a quarterback, of course, he is going to have a good amount of points. However, as you can see by his ranking amongst his peers at quarterback, he is not a great option.

Don’t get me wrong, Goff could excel with all these new tools and a better offensive line. Los Angeles has added five significant new talents to the passing offense, as well as bringing in All-Pro tackle Andrew Whitworth. Plus, although he is getting bashed by football purists, Sean McVay may be able to utilize Goff in ways that Jeff Fisher couldn’t.

Goff certainly has the ability, hence why the Rams took him first overall last year. However, his biggest drawback is his inexperience. He played in a fairly unsuccessful system at Cal, which could be hindering his performance. Sure, he did improve the team immensely, but the winning culture was not there.

Then he was thrown into a disastrous situation in Los Angeles under a head coach who was not good for the team. Goff certainly has the ability to blossom into something special, but like we saw with Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers early in their careers, he should have sat it out for the time being.

However, I would not shy away from picking Goff in the later rounds as a backup option. The upside is huge and is a relatively low risk.
