Fantasy Football: The five best Chargers to target this season
By Jason Elbaum
Philip Rivers has started every game for the Chargers for the past 11 years. However, this has not necessarily meant consistency, as he has not been a top 10 fantasy QB since 2013. He threw a career-high 21 interceptions last year, which severely hurt his fantasy value.
The good news for fantasy owners targeting Philip Rivers is that he will be armed with a deep supporting cast in his first season under offensive-minded coach Anthony Lynn. The emergence of Melvin Gordon at running back should force defenses to remain disciplined against the run, allowing Rivers to have room downfield to distribute the ball.
Another reason to believe that Rivers is destined for a bounce-back season is that his receivers dropped 4.7% of his passes, which was 10th-highest in the league. With the Chargers receivers having another season of experience under their belts, they should be able to improve this number significantly.
The bottom line when it comes to Philip Rivers is that he has not shown enough consistency throughout his time in the league to be considered an every-week fantasy starter. He’s a great option as a backup during your first quarterback’s bye week, but that’s about it with the wealth of talent at the QB position this season.
