USC Football Week One Preview: Western Michigan
By Jason Elbaum
The Pick
On paper, the Trojans have superior athletes at almost every position compared to Western Michigan. Because it’s the season opener, fans can expect some rust from QB Sam Darnold and the rest of the offense. It’ll be interesting to see which receivers emerge as having chemistry with Darnold besides Deontay Burnett.
Looking at the matchups, it looks like Ronald Jones II should have a field day running the ball against an inexperienced Western Michigan front four. With all of the questions surrounding USC’s offensive line, this should be a game where the big guys up front gain confidence for the future.
Defensively, the key for the Trojans will be to stop the run and not allow the Broncos to dictate the pace of the game. This will be much easier said than done, as Western Michigan is guaranteed to have fresh legs running the ball with their three-pronged attack. If USC manages to stuff the run and force Jon Wassink to throw down the field, it’ll be a long day for the defending MAC champions.
