LAC: K YoungHoe Koo

Okay, I know what you are thinking, why does anyone want to watch for a kicker? While the kicker is immensely important in the NFL, nobody really cares that much about them. When is the last time you saw a football fan wear a kicker’s jersey? The only time I can remember is when the Raiders were awfully bad and Sebastian Janikowski was their only hope.

However, fans of the Los Angeles Chargers should take an extra look at Koo’s performance in week one against the Broncos. Koo landed the job after beating out Josh Lambo in the preseason. Both Koo and Lambo thrived, with both hitting a field goal greater than 50 yards. In the end, Koo was kept around while Lambo was waived.

This is coming off of two not great, but not so bad seasons for Lambo. In both seasons with the Chargers, Lambo nailed 26 of 32 field goals, giving him an 81.3% career percentage. Combined between both seasons Lambo nailed 89.7% of his extra points.

However, those stats were not enough for the former USA soccer goalkeeper. The Los Angeles Chargers ultimately opted for the undrafted kicker out of Georgia Southern. Koo becomes the fourth Korean born player to make an NFL roster and will first test his chops in Denver.

If anything, the first game of the season will give Koo a good showing. Playing in the thin mile high air of Denver will only help Koo, likely giving Charger fans something to be optimistic about.
