Los Angeles Lakers: Top 10 point guards in franchise history
By Jason Reed
3. Norm Nixon
Norm Nixon was the starting point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers before the number one guy on this list came around, and for a short period of time, Nixon’s solid play actually resulted in perhaps the greatest point guard of all-time getting moved over to shooting guard. Nixon enjoyed a six-year stint with the Lakers from 1977 to 1983 before being traded to the (then) San Diego Clippers.
Nixon ended up being a two-time all-star and a two-time NBA Champion when his career was all said and finished. Both championships, of course, came with the Lakers and one of his two NBA All-Star Game appearances came with the Lakers. That lone appearance came in 1981-1982 in arguably Nixon’s best season of his career.
In that season, Nixon averaged 17.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. High assist totals were familiar to Dixon, as he even averaged as many as 11.1 a game in the 1983-1984 season with the San Diego Clippers. In his six-year career with the Lakers, Nixon averaged 16.4 points, 7.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
Nixon was a key component to both the 1980 and 1982 NBA Championship runs and will go down as one of the best Lakers to ever do it. Overall, Nixon is fourth all-time in assists and eighth all-time in steals. While Nixon will not go down as one of the most prolific scorers in Lakers’ history, he certainly will go down as the third best point guard of all-time.
