3. 2015 NLDS Greinke Forgets to cover third 

In a winner take all game 5 at Dodger Stadium the Dodgers had their second “ace” in Zack Greinke on the mound facing the New York Mets. Greinke was the runner-up to Jake Arrieta for the Cy Young Award, outpitching the true ace of the staff, Clayton Kershaw. Despite a strong performance, the Dodgers couldn’t find a win with their ace on the mound.

Leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth with Daniel Murphy on first the Dodgers infield shifted to cover left-handed hitter Lucas Duda. When Duda walked Murphy advanced to second and didn’t stop continuing to third base when Greinke forgot to cover third on the shift. A sacrifice fly scored Murphy to tie the score at 2-2.

Greinke would give up a home run to Murphy in the sixth inning which provided the winning margin of 3-2 for the game and the series as the Dodgers were eliminated. It would be the last game Greinke pitcher for the Dodgers as he left via free agency to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the off-season.

The New York Mets went on to have an improbable run, sweeping the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS before dropping the World Series to the Kansas City Royals in five games. The deep postseason run was led by Murphy and his slugfest, but against the Dodgers, his legs and awareness proved to be the most crucial.
