3. “Matt Holliday…Drops the ball!!!” – 2009 NLDS

The 2009 NLDS was 1-0 in favor of the Dodgers but the St. Louis Cardinals were on their way to tying the series in the bottom of the ninth, a routine lineout changed that all. Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin was brought in to protect a 2-1 lead with one out, he struck out slugger Manny Ramirez leaving the Dodgers on out from a loss.

James Loney hit a line drive to Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday best described by play-by-play announcer Dick Stockton:

"A line drive to left field, Matt Holliday coming on…drops the ball!!!"

On one play the dynamic of the game changed as the next batter Casey Blake walked and Ronnie Belliard tied the game on a run-scoring single. Another walk loaded the bases for pinch hitter Mark Loretta who, despite owning a 0-15 career record against Franklin, deposited the game-winning single for a 3-2 win.

Loretta’s walk-off win was the first Dodgers walk-off win since Kirk Gibson’s 1988 Game 1 World Series home run. With momentum on their side, the Dodgers would stun the Cardinals sweeping them after game three win.
