Nobody is giving up on the process by making the deal

Brandon Ingram was selected second overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, with Jaylen Brown selected right after him and headed for Boston. Since then, both young stars have had different impacts on their respective teams.

Ingram didn’t come out as strong as expected, but there’s still a window of opportunity for him to prove himself and that he is a valuable part of the puzzle. With Jaylen Brown, it’s been more about finding a style of basketball that suits his game best.

With Kyrie Irving in town, and especially after the Hayward ordeal, Jaylen Brown will either be a major part of the Celtics’ plans or he won’t fit in the picture at all — there’s no in-between. Also, the talent at the forward position when Tatum has to sit out isn’t really there, but that could be fixed with adding Brandon Ingram to the mix.

It would be different if the deal involved draft picks or some sort of minor consolation as part of the package, but a straight swap avoids any of that coming into play. The reality is that the Celtics need to make sure they have a dependable forward outside of Tatum and the Lakers are in need of some more talent at the two guard.

What this potential trade comes down to at the end of the day is the respective fits that Brown and Ingram serve in the NBA. Ingram has a lot of growth to do physically in order to be a dominant player, while Brown has that explosive edge you don’t see in a lot of guys his age with his experience.
