The Los Angeles Dodgers have three years remaining on their deal with Clayton Kershaw. After that is anybody’s guess as to what will happen.

Sure, you could look at this as thinking way too far ahead, but think what you want. After losing to the Houston Astros in a thrilling seven game World Series this past season, the Dodgers are all the way back at square one — where they really don’t want to be.

You don’t have to go far to find lofty expecations for how they’ll perform in the upcoming year, but does that really mean they’re good enough to win it all and bring home a championship?

No, probably not.

They missed out on Giancarlo Stanton among other big name targets so far, and have yet to drastically “improve”, for lack of a better word. They’re the same old Dodgers and before you know it, they’re going to have to deal with Clayton Kershaw being 32 years old and his contract being expired.

That’s not until the end of the 2020 season, but that doesn’t mean that Los Angeles isn’t concerned with how that might turn out.

Like the Los Angeles Clippers in the past, the Dodgers have all the pieces to get it done. Coaching, talent, incredible fan base. But does it happen? No, of course not.

If they can’t win the World Series next season, I don’t see anything stopping Kershaw from walking when it becomes his turn to be in a free agent, even if the Dodgers throw all of the money they possibly can at him.

He’s done what he can to help them win, and no matter what it’s not enough. Year after year, this team fails to reach its ultimate goal and because of that they’re going to have to deal with the ultimate consequences.
