Comparing the Dodgers top five prospects to their MLB counterparts
By Jason Reed
2. OF Alex Verdugo
MLB Counterpart: Odubel Herrera
Despite being the Dodgers second-best prospect heading into 2018, Alex Verdugo very well may be the most hyped up prospect of the bunch. Verdugo certainly is the most big league ready out of the five and has the tools to transition nicely in the MLB. In fact, it is safe to say that Verdugo could extend the Dodgers’ Rookie of the Year streak to three seasons.
Verdugo has a smooth swing that naturally produces gap-to-gap drives. Thus, his slugging percentage will be the beneficiary with increased doubles and triples. He is not the most powerful, ut has some pop in his bat due to his mechanics. It is conceivable that, at his peak, he could reach 20 home runs on the season.
Verdugo is an above average fielder with a fantastic arm. His speed gives him pretty good range in the field that allows him to play any of the three outfield positions.
Verdugo’s skill set is very similar to that of Odubel Herrera. The left-handed hitting Philadelphia Phillies outfielder was third in all outfielders in doubles with 42. His 14 home runs and 56 RBIs are right in line where Verdugo projects to be. Herrera is a good fielder, again, with a solid arm.
Verdugo is the perfect guy to put atop the order to setup the power hitting bats. Whether it is with singles, doubles, triples or home runs, Verdugo should be able to hit the .300 mark in the bigs.
