Dodgers trade rumors: Possible trade packages for Yasmani Grandal
By Jason Reed
Yasmani Grandal has been the subject of Dodgers trade rumors this offseason. What exactly is Grandal and his slugging prowess worth on the market?
Yasmani Grandal has been the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ starting catcher since 2015; his first season with LA after being acquired from the San Diego Padres and his lone all-star appearance. Grandal’s power-hitting bat has been a consistent boost in the Dodgers lineup that otherwise has always been changing and fluctuating. Grandal joins Justin Turner, Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig as the only starters from 2015 to still be with the Dodgers.
There is no doubt that Grandal is one of the best power-hitting catchers in the game today. Since joining the Dodgers, Grandal has slugged the third-most home runs (65), driven in the ninth-most RBIs (177) as well as posting the third best Wins Above Replacement — according to FanGraphs — among catchers.
Grandal’s electric bat and great fielding behind the plate is a rare blend by today’s standards. However, Grandal does struggle to consistently hit the baseball; going through stretches where he is smashing home runs and following it up with massive cold streaks.
Thus, the Dodgers seemingly are ready to move on from Grandal to the more consistent, young, Austin Barnes. With Grandal in the last year of his contract and the organization’s depth at catcher, Dodgers trade rumors around Grandal have emerged.
Grandal certainty is an intriguing option for any MLB team. With all things considered, here are three trade packages the Dodgers could receive for Yasmani Grandal.
