2. The Los Angeles Chargers must focus on re-signing key pieces

For many teams, the NFL offseason is about finding new talent on the free agent market or replacing the talent that they left behind. The NFL is not as much of a talent carousel as the NBA or MLB, but there still are significant free agent signings each and every offseason.

Instead of trying to compete for the hottest names on the free agent market, the Los Angeles Chargers must turn their focus on first re-signing key pieces that could go elsewhere. Most importantly, Tre Boston and Tyrell Williams.

Both Boston and Williams were huge for the Los Angeles Chargers last season. Boston brought a veteran insight into an otherwise young defense. Boston was third in the team in total tackles and bested Casey Hayward for the most interceptions with six.

The Chargers signed Boston to a one-year, $700,000 contract prior to 2017. Boston proved that he is worth much more than that and the Chargers must pay him what he deserves to avoid a massive hole at free safety.

Retaining Williams will be easier as he is just a restricted free agent, so the cards are in Los Angeles’ hands. However, there is absolutely no reason why the Chargers shouldn’t bring Williams back on a multi-year deal.

Williams was Philip Rivers’ number one deep target in the middle of the field and came up with some huge plays down the stretch. Overall, Williams caught 43 passes for 728 yards and four touchdowns. While Keenan Allen may be the number one receiver, the Chargers cannot afford to lose the versatility Williams brings to the receiving core.
