Trevor Ariza

While there have been no direct ties between the Los Angeles Lakers and Trevor Ariza, a Julius Randle for Ariza swap would be best for both sides. Rob Pelinka, the Lakers General Manager, actually use to be Ariza’s agent before taking the Lakers’ GM role. Back in November, Ariza changed agencies to CAA Sports.

The motives of this change are Ariza’s attempt to cash out on the best payday possible. Ariza is a free agent after this season, making him an even better fit for the Los Angeles Lakers in a Julius Randle trade.

On the surface, it may not make sense to trade Randle for an expiring deal, especially considering Randle may not be on the payroll anyway next season. However, the Lakers can get more out of the Rockets in this deal which may make it more lucrative.

The draft pick situation is hard with the Hawks owning the Rockets pick if it falls outside the top three. Obviously, it will, however, the Rockets cannot trade any future picks until those draft rights are settled.

Thus, the Rockets and Lakers can agree to a provisional deal that swaps the two players with the agreement that once the draft situation is settled, the Rockets can send the Lakers their 2019 first round pick. Los Angeles gets cap space, can still win games this season and gets a draft pick. Much better than just letting Randle walk.
