Los Angeles Lakers: Three reasons why the Lakers will never re-sign Isaiah Thomas
By Jason Reed
1. He has proven he cannot play with other stars
If the Lakers are going to go all-in on building this super team during the 2018 summer, they have to stay far away from Isaiah Thomas. Thomas is still a great player and has shown that he still has it in him to be the king of the fourth quarter and drop 40 points on the best defenses. There is no denying that.
However, Thomas proved during his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers that he cannot play alongside other superstars. Granted, a lot of the blame can be thrown towards LeBron James and his dictatorship hold on the Cleveland Cavaliers. That is why Kevin Love has had issues, why Kyrie Irving wanted to walk away to begin with.
Drama aside though, Thomas proved that it is harder for him to succeed with other stars on the court. Thomas and James are terrible on the court together, which goes against everything we thought we knew about basketball.
Two stars on the court would seemingly give the both of them better looks. With LeBron being very pass-heavy, it wouldn’t seem logical that Thomas would actually regress with him.
But he did. While some of that does boil down to his hip and not having his 100% athleticism back, there is a common trend that Thomas has shown in his NBA career. Isaiah Thomas can only be Isaiah Thomas when the offense is built around him. When it is not, well, his size — and right now his missing athleticism — ultimately hold him back.
