C — Juan Graterol

Gold Glove winner Martin Maldonado has finally given the Angels a solid everyday catcher and looks to continue that role in 2018. Behind him, the team brought in crafty veteran Rene Rivera to provide depth. Thus, the Angels catching situation seems to be completely figured out and does not need further evaluation.

However, it is not terribly uncommon for teams to carry a third catcher, especially in the American League with a designated hitter. While roster spots are limited and could be used elsewhere, the Angels could be surprised by young catcher Juan Graterol, thus granting him an Opening Day roster spot.

Graterol played in 48 games for the Angels last season. His offense production was pretty bad with a .202 average, but that is not where his value lies. Graterol is great defensively behind the plate and provides a great battery mate for these young pitchers.

Thus, Graterol does have value to this Angels’ roster as Maldanado and Rivera will need time off. Is it a likely addition to the roster? No. However, if Graterol does indeed impress in Spring Training, it is going to be hard to deny his roster spot after his strong showing behind the plate last year.
