INF — Kaleb Cowart

Every team seemingly has that one utility infielder that specializes in one or two positions but realistically can play anywhere on the diamond if need be. The Los Angeles Dodgers have Enrique Hernandez, the Chicago Cubs have Ben Zobrist, the Houston Astros have Marwin Gonzalez.

For the Los Angeles Angels, that utility infielder next season could be Kaleb Cowart. Traditionally, Cowart is a second and third baseman by trade. However, Cowart has made one appearance at first for the Angels and realistically could play shortstop for the Angels if Andrelton Simmons or Zack Cozart are unavailable.

However, having Cowart as a second and third baseman alone gives the Angels much more flexibility. Cowart can be a viable backup for Ian Kinsler as well as a fill-in at third when Cozart needs to play short.

The problem is for Cowart, though, that is competition is stiff. Luis Valbuena can be the everyday backup third baseman as C.J. Cron and Albert Pujols have first base locked down. Jefry Marte could even bring in help at third if needed; all of these guys can also fill in at second if need be.

Cowart definitely deserves a roster spot, that is without a doubt. However, it all comes down to whether or not the Angels simply run out of spots to give; if they do, Cowart will be the first to miss the cut.

To ensure his roster spot in the 2018 season, Cowart needs to show up during the Angels Spring Training and prove his worth.
