Hyun-Jin Ryu

While Hyun-Jin Ryu will not be actively shopped by the Dodgers like Matt Kemp will be, if we do see Ryu traded this year it is likely going to be in a much larger package for the Dodgers. Thus, perhaps it is a good thing to see Ryu go, especially if it nets a significant return. Luckily, that might actually happen this season.

Ryu is a decent major league pitcher that at times can look unhittable and at times lack confidence in his pitches and location. However, Ryu is on an expiring deal and is not a long-term contractual agreement for any team that acquires him.

Thus, if a team like the Tampa Bay Rays decides to blow it up (which I hope they will) Ryu becomes a potential piece that could be included in a deal for Chris Archer. The Dodgers would be sending a pretty prospect package to help the Rays build their farm system. And the icing on the cake would be Ryu, who would be a one-year rental to at least help said team win some games.

Ryu will go if the Dodgers do make a move for an elite number two starting pitcher behind Clayton Kershaw. If not, well, Ryu’s future is unclear. If he thrives, he will maintain his rotation spot deep into the season. However, if he flounders, he may be moved to the bullpen in favor of a young arm such as Walker Buehler.
