Lakers Rumors: Finding the best possible Lakers “super team”
By Jason Reed
All of the Lakers rumors that have been presented have been centered around one premise: building a title-contending super team in the next two seasons.
The super team has never been more relevant in the NBA than it is right now. Yes, there have been historically great teams throughout the years with multiple Hall of Famers. Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain; Magic Johnson, James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman; Karl Malone and John Stockton; Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.
However, the super team has never been as important as it is in today’s NBA. Eight years ago all it took for Kobe to get a ring was Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. Two borderline all-stars, yes, but it was not this super team dynamic that we see today.
The Boston Celtics started the revelation, the Miami Heat continued it. Finally, the Golden State Warriors perfected it by drafting their super team and then bringing in Kevin Durant. Golden State has two MVPs in the starting five, arguably the best defender in the league and a top-three three-point shooter.
You can’t compete with the Warriors without a super team. The best player on the planet, LeBron James, needed Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love to squeak out one NBA Finals victory. The Houston Rockets seem to be the only team capable of defeating Golden State.
The Los Angeles Lakers, with all of the prestige that comes with being the Lakers, want to jump right back into contending. They have done the whole “rebuilding” thing. Now it is time for their own super team.
Multiple superstars and different pairings have been included in the Lakers rumors. Here, we rank the potential super teams to find the best.
