Lakers Rumors: Finding the best possible Lakers “super team”
By Jason Reed
Fourth-best Lakers super team:
-
Starting five: Lonzo Ball, Klay Thompson, Paul George, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle (with Kyle Kuzma as the sixth-man)
The fourth-best Lakers super team on this list checks in as a plan for 2019, not 2018. The summer of 2018 has long been rumored to be the targetted date to bring in several superstars from LeBron James to Paul George. However, reports surfaced from ESPN that the Lakers front office was widening their view on the team and could wait until the summer of 2019.
This makes sense to not go all-in on 2018. Paul George has a player option and may not even opt out of his contract. As does LeBron. Really, the best free agents available not on a player option are DeMarcus Cousins and Chris Paul. Paul does not fit the team and Cousins is coming off of injury.
Thus, if nobody opts out of their contract this off-season the Lakers are left waiting one more year to construct their super team; which is fine. Lakers rumors of George and Klay Thompson teaming up in LA first surfaced last year. Thompson will be a free agent following the 2018-2019 season when the Warriors need to figure out how to pay Kevin Durant.
This team would be great and would give the Lakers a better chance as they are taking two stars directly from Western Conference contenders. If Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle and sixth-man Kyle Kuzma continue to develop on pace, they could have 3-5 all-stars on the roster.
However, that is if they progress into all-stars. That possibility exists with these other teams, which are arguably more talented.
