Second-best Lakers super team:

  • Starting five: Lonzo Ball, Paul George, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, DeMarcus Cousins (with Julius Randle as the sixth-man)

This is the first instance in which we see Kyle Kuzma make the starting five over Julius Randle, but with this team, it makes more sense. Randle would be better served as a sixth-man that can fill time both at center and power forward. His flexibility, on this team at least, would best be suited off of the bench.

When it comes to this team though, the Lakers are taking a big risk. Before DeMarcus Cousins’ Achilles injury, this would have been my number one choice for the Los Angeles Lakers. LA needs a center next year and Paul George has inevitably been tied to Los Angeles for over a year.

Plus, look back at all of the greatest Lakers’ teams. They all had dominant centers and Cousins is arguably the best center in the league. West had Chamberlain, Magic had Kareem, Kobe had Shaq and then the tandem of Gasol and Bynum. Randle is great, but I would not necessarily put him among this elite group of guys.

Cousins, however, I would. Although he is not the same hard-nosed type of center and tends to space the floor out more, he is dominant in today’s NBA nonetheless.

However, Cousins’ injury puts a lot of question marks around his future. Realistically he will only miss a month of the season at most. Yet nobody knows how he will return. This Achilles injury has a bad track record; the one thing on Cousin’s side is his age.

Because of those question marks, though, this becomes the second-best potential Lakers super team.
