7. Dennis Smith Jr.

  • 15.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 0.5 blocks, 0.6 steals

This may be the most controversial listing on this top-10 and you can easily argue that Dennis Smith Jr. should be higher on this list.  Smith has shown immense promise in all assets of the game and has contributing to the scoring, rebounding and distribution efforts for the Dallas Mavericks. Smith is a future all-star with immense, promising, talent.

However, this rookie class is just so deep that it is hard to rank Smith ahead of any of these other six guys. While Smith has been good, the impact that these other rookies have had on their team simply outweighs what Smith has done for the Dallas Mavericks.

Yeah, he is scoring a lot, but he is also doing so taking a healthy amount of shots while shooting under 40 percent. Yes, that same issue has plagued Lonzo Ball, but that is largely in part due to Ball’s early season flounders.

I really like Dennis Smith Jr. I would argue that he is the second-best point guard in this draft class and potentially has a higher ceiling than Lonzo Ball. Ball will always be a great all-around NBA player, but NBA fans love scoring. The scoring ceiling for Smith is higher.

However, this is not a list about the future, it is a list about the now. And for me, Dennis Smith Jr. has been the seventh-best rookie.
