Lakers: How to keep Julius Randle and bring in two superstars
By Jason Reed

Sign LeBron James, Paul George, Julius Randle and Nerlens Noel
LeBron James, Paul George and Julius Randle you expected. Nerlens Noel is a bit of a curveball. However, reports did emerge in December that Noel could be LeBron’s running mate in LA. Los Angeles would be able to get him for cheap as well, it is a win-win.
After the Luol Deng trade, the Lakers would have $83 million in practical cap space. With Brandon not set to be a restricted free agent for another three years, the Lakers can give the new superstars three-year contracts. Enough time to win three rings, and re-evaluate where they want to go next.
The contracts could look something like this:
- LeBron James: Three-year, $105 million
- Paul George: Three-year, $84 million
- Julius Randle: Four-year, $60 million (Can opt out after three seasons)
- Nerlens Noel: Two-year, $10 million (Team option after the first season)
All of these contracts add up to $82 million annually, but the Lakers would be backloading Randle and Noel. Randle could make $13 million the first season, $14 million the second, $15 million the third and $18 million the fourth if he opts in. As for Noel, the Lakers could pay him $4 million or so in year one and $6 million if he proves himself for year two.
This gives the Lakers $3 million to sign two draft picks, with Randle’s Bird Rights it becomes easier. The Lakers should then draft two backup guards to compete for a roster spot next year.
