The USC Trojans seemed to be a sure-fire lock for the NCAA Tournament. However, on Selection Sunday, the Trojans were robbed.

The USC Trojans had the best season in quite some time. USC finished second in the Pac-12 and coasted to the Pac-12 tournament finals after blowing out both Oregon and Oregon State. Although the Trojans ultimately fell victim to the one-seeded Arizona Wildcats, they did enough to leave a lasting impression on the selection committee.

The USC Trojans made the big dance last season after finishing as the sixth-seed in the Pac-12. With that result in mind, it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Los Angeles would have one team in the NCAA Tourney and it would be USC.

Well, Los Angeles does have one team in the tourney, but it is UCLA, not USC. And as happy as we are that UCLA snuck into the “first four,” the fact that USC was left out leaves a sour taste in our mouth.

Especially considering that the selection committee chose Arizona State to be the third representative of the Pac-12. Arizona State lost in the first-round of the Pac-12 tournament and finished as the ninth-seed in the Pac-12. The ninth-seed!!!

The argument for Arizona State is that the committee wants to “value games in November the same as games in February.” Arizona State did start hot with a 12-game win streak. They did defeat Xavier and Kentucky, two ranked teams. However, they completely fell off the ship late in the season and couldn’t make any impressions in the Pac-12 tournament.

Instead of weighing these games the same, then, the selection committee is seemingly favoring early season success. That is counterproductive, don’t ya think?

Before Selection Sunday I said I would bet my life savings that USC would make the NCAA Tournament, luckily I didn’t. However, I also promised Michael Duarte of NBC LA that I would make a change.org petition if USC did not make the tourney.

And, well, I did.

Obviously, this is not going to change anything. However, it could show the NCAA how bad they really messed up. If you have a minute or two, you can sign the petition here. It’s all for fun, but it is still outrageous that USC got snubbed.

Next: Selection Sunday reaction

At the end of the day, no amount of signatures is going to reverse the decision of the selection committee. Let’s enjoy the Trojans in the NIT, sign this petition and let the NCAA know that the mistakes they made are evident.
