Chargers free agent target: FS Tyrann Mathieu

The Honey Badger is on the market, everyone. While the Los Angeles Chargers have not emerged as potential favorites to land Mathieu, at least according to CBS Sports, there is still a possibility that Mathieu stays out West and resides in LA.

The Arizona Cardinals released Mathieu after the two sides could not come to an agreement on a restructured deal that involved a pay cut. Mathieu was set to make over nine million dollars this upcoming season and will likely ask for a hefty payday. A five-year, $60 million contract seems like a nice price tag for Mathieu.

This may ultimately scare the Chargers off, but they can afford to make this deal. The Chargers have $18 million in cap space, according to Spotrac, enough to work out a deal. While it would not leave the team with much flexibility, the Chargers only really need to add one impact free agent and draft the rest of the talent.

Mathieu would then fill in the hole that Tre Boston would leave behind. Not only will Mathieu fill the void, he will be an improvement. He is one of the best young safeties in the game and would be a ball-hawking menace alongside an already great secondary in LA.

That pass-rush alongside a secondary that contains Mathieu would be incredible. Plus, Mathieu can also help out in the return game, if need be. He checks all the boxes for the Chargers, it is just a matter if Dean Spanos wants to open his pocketbook.
