Chargers free agent target: RB Doug Martin

I really like the idea of Doug Martin signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. Heading into this off-season, running back is not one of the most talked about needs for the Chargers. However, it would be unwise for LA to not add to a backfield that is going to consist of just Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler.

Martin would be a great piece for the Chargers to add and could revitalize his career in a particular role in LA. While he will not be a featured back and will likely never regain his old form, Martin can bring a particular dynamic to the Chargers backfield.

Martin could serve as the Chargers featured back and short-yardage situations. The five-foot-nine back has the ability to bounce a run outside and follow his blockers but can also pound the football up the middle to convert on third and one situations. Plus, Martin can also be a tool in the passing game, making it even harder for defenses to guess on the pass or run.

The Chargers love to run a two-back shotgun set with Gordon and Ekeler on either side of Rivers. Martin only adds to that dynamic and gives the Chargers the depth that Branden Oliver would have.

While this will not be the old Martin and he will not cement the Chargers as a Super Bowl contending team, he can act as a relatively cheap pickup with nothing but upside. Even if he does not perform up to LA’s standards, the team still has Gordon and Ekeler to rely on.
