The best baseball books for baseball fans and why they are worth reading
The Betrayal: “The 1919 World Series And The Birth of Modern Baseball”
Most baseball fans have seen or at least heard about, Field of Dreams (1989), the movie that made us all ask if this was heaven. It wasn’t, what it was, was Iowa, and it’s on that small Iowa farm where we meet Ray Kinsella, who builds a baseball field so that the exiled players from the 1919 Chicago “Black Sox”, can come back and play baseball.
History says that eight White Sox players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, threw the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. Those eight players were promised $20,000 each by members of a New York mob. They never received their payment but were rather banished from the game of baseball forever.
Jackson played his last professional game on the 27th of September, in the year 1920.
This scandal changed baseball forever. It compromised its integrity, and it questioned its ability to be honest, and genuine.
This book depicts the betrayal of those eight players and everyone who was involved. It tells the story of one of baseball’s few, game-altering events, and who knows where we’d be had it not happened.
