Chargers: AFC West Power Rankings after start of league year
By Jason Reed
It has become a custom that the start of the NFL year leads to a frenzy of moves. Although the Chargers have been patient, the AFC West is vastly different.
The Los Angeles Chargers have been one of the quietest teams in the NFL during the frenzy that ensues with the start of the NFL year. While the rest of the NFL underwent a talent swap that completely changed the landscape of the league, the Chargers remained reserved. There is still plenty of time to make moves, but for now, the Chargers have been content with less significant signings.
Instead, the Chargers seem to be working on internal players instead of external players. The team extended star corner Casey Hayward and did not pursue safety Tyrann Mathieu, needing to re-sign Tre Boston. This ideology makes sense for the Chargers; they were a few bad kicks from being a playoff team.
Once they were in the playoffs, the Chargers could have been a dangerous team. Of course, this will always be a what if.
The Chargers front office will likely approach the rest of the off-season in a calculated manner. From potential free agents and trades to the 2018 NFL Draft, the Chargers know they are just one or two pieces away from being legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
The rest of the division, though, has not been as silent. Here are our power rankings for the AFC West after the latest frenzy of off-season moves.
