Lakers Rumors: The best fits for Isaiah Thomas this offseason
By Jason Reed
3. New Orleans Pelicans
Anthony Davis is the New Orleans Pelicans, period. Davis kicked it into an entirely new gear after the team lost DeMarcus Cousins to an Achilles injury. Davis has singlehandedly inserted himself into the MVP discussion and has reminded the league how good he really is.
With Cousins’ injury, though, Davis may not have his help next season. An Achilles injury is a hard one to return from, thus, the Pelicans may be better suited to not pursue Cousins.
The best case scenario is that the Pelicans can land Cousins at a discounted price. However, that is unlikely as some desperate team will likely offer him max money.
What the Pelicans have needed, even with Cousins on the court, is a solid shooter that can space out the floor. To be fair, Jrue Holiday has stepped up for the Pelicans, scoring nearly 20 a game on 33.5 percent three-point shooting.
Still, the Pacers are going to need to continue to add guys that can stretch the floor and shoot the ball while Davis does the dirty work down low. Isaiah Thomas would be perfect for this system, creating an insane pick and roll combo with Davis that would be better than the combo with Blake Griffin.
The Pelicans have the money to make it work and have a good system for Thomas to excel in. However, it all comes down to the playing time. Alongside Jrue Holiday, Thomas may not get the superstar minutes he once did. Thus, due to Thomas’ own self-evaluation of not being a sixth man, this move does have one significant flaw.
