5. Derwin James, S, Florida State

Derwin James is one of the most talented prospects in this year’s draft class and is the second-best safety in the draft, at least as far as Walter Football is concerned. If James fell to the Los Angeles Chargers at the 17th overall pick it would be very hard to pass up on a talent as special as his. However, that is if he even falls that low to begin with.

James’ projected draft spot varies. Three of four NFL experts for NFL.com have Derwin James going seventh overall to the Tampa Bay Buccanneers. However, the fourth analyst, Charley Casserly, has James falling all the way down to the 17th overall pick to be scooped up by the Chargers.

While the main focus has been on help at linebacker and defensive tackle, safety may be the position the Chargers are actually targeting in the first-round. The team could arguably get a viable linebacker and defensive tackle in the second and third rounds while grabbing a safety in round one.

There may be a reason that the Chargers have not yet re-signed breakout safety Tre Boston. That reason could be that Derwin James is the team’s top priority. The only reason he is so low on our big board is that the chance he falls this low are slim.
