1. Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama

It all comes down to two Alabama defenders. As far as I am concerned, Payne is the second-best defensive tackle behind Vita Vea, will most likely be available for the Chargers at the 17th overall pick, and arguably is a better fit than Vea. While Vea has the all-around edge, Payne brings exactly what the Chargers need.

The ability to stuff the run.

Payne looks to be the best run-stuffing defensive tackle in the 2018 NFL Draft. While he had his shortcomings at times in getting to the passer, the Chargers do not need to focus on the pass-rush with Bosa and Ingram already wrecking havoc.

Instead, they need a ruthless plug in the middle that can cushion the loss of Corey Liuget during his four-game suspension and serve as the replacement to Brandon Mebane once Liuget returns.

Payne was the primary run stopper for Alabama and was why the Crimson Tide were so special last season. His speed and strength make him a magnet to any running lanes that open. He is undoubtedly NFL ready and could compete for the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Payne is that good of a fit on the Chargers.

While his stats may not be the most polarizing as he will not collect many sacks, he will help the Chargers overcome the biggest shortcoming and will make the Chargers instant contenders.
