Los Angeles Chargers: Best offensive draft picks of all-time
By Jason Reed
Tight end: Kellen Winslow
Antonio Gates is the greatest tight end in Chargers’ history and challenges Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson as the greatest Charger of all-time. In fact, Gates will go down as either the greatest tight end of all-time — or second greatest behind Tony Gonzalez — depending on who you ask.
The Chargers did not draft Gates, though, and instead signed him as an undrafted free agent. Thus, the franchises best tight end selection has to be the greatest tight end in team history before Gates came around; Kellen Winslow.
Winslow was phenomenal for the Chargers and set the bar for other tight ends such as Gates and Gonzalez to live up to. Winslow spent his entire career in San Diego from 1979 to 1987. In that time, he was elected to five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams. Winslow was elected into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1995.
The Chargers selected Winslow with the 13th overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft. Overall, Winslow is fifth in team history in receiving yards (6741) and fifth in receiving touchdowns (45). Gates is the only tight end that has bested Winslow’s numbers with the others ahead of him being wide receivers.
