The Los Angeles Chargers struck gold in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by selecting safety Derwin James with the 17th overall pick.

The Los Angeles Chargers arguably had the best pick in the entire first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Of course, teams ahead of the Chargers got sensational talents such as Saquon Barkley, Quenton Nelson, Roquan Smith and Tremaine Edmunds, to name a few. However, in terms of the value of selection, the Chargers reign supreme.

Derwin James was regarded by many as the best safety heading into the draft. Walter Football had the Florida State safety as the best in the draft class. Justis Mosqueda of Bleacher Report had James as one of the steals of the first round.

Overall, the first round was weird. The Browns selected Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick then selected cornerback Denzel Ward with the fourth overall pick, who they probably could have traded down three or four spots and still selected.

The Bills traded up and selected Josh Allen over Josh Rosen, the Saints gave up their first-round pick next year to move up and pick defensive end Marcus Davenport and the Ravens managed to snag Lamar Jackson with the 32nd overall pick; who many considered the most talented quarterback in this class.

Out of all the madness, James slipped to 17 and the Los Angeles Chargers had one of the easiest picks to make. Twitter rightfully had some nice reactions to the pick.

Isaac Gutierrez is a former contributor for LA Sports Hub and now site expert for our sister site, Golden Gate Sports. Despite making the move to cover the rival teams in Northern California, Isaac is still a Charger fan and got exactly what. Let’s hope that first tweet was hyperbolic…

As for our other FanSided sister site, Bolt Beat, they also had a pretty great reaction to the Chargers snagging James.

Skip Bayless is one of the most polarizing names in sports. Some of his takes people agree with, and some, well, people are not so friendly towards. Bayless loves himself a hot take and when he is right, he won’t live it down. This hot take is promising for Charger fans.

The Ringer had a great reaction to the Derwin James pick. I bet Charger fans are feeling a little boastful right now, so this tweet only fuels those now large egos.

Finally, Barrett Sallee gave perhaps the most quotable of the tweets mentioned here. Like I said, James was considered by many to be the best safety in the draft, yet he still fell to the 17th overall pick to a team with a great defensive coordinator and secondary.

There are still going to be some issues in stopping the run for the Chargers. Defensive tackle and linebacker are still question marks heading into next season. However, the Chargers can still add solid, respectable talents in the second and third rounds to help bolster those efforts.

However, the Los Angeles Chargers could not have made a better pick with the options left on the table with the 17th overall pick. Los Angeles already has one of the scariest pass-rush secondary combinations in the NFL. Now, they also have a safety who could be Pro Bowl caliber as early as his rookie year.

Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley is going to make the most out of Derwin James in the NFL. Charger fans, get excited.
