Dodgers Beat the Streak: Big night at the plate after a day off
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Dodgers won an old-fashioned Coors Field slugfest, 11-8, over the Colorado Rockies. Now, the Dodgers send Walker Buehler to the mound.
The Los Angeles Dodgers‘ Friday afternoon game against the Colorado Rockies definitely was an interesting one.
Not only was it an offensive showcase with 19 combined runs and 25 combined hits, there were some interesting storylines in play and some weird occurrences that made this game fun to watch.
First and foremost, the Dodgers bought into the “opener” role and started Scott Alexander to face the left-handed hitters atop the Rockies order. Alexander then gave way to rookie call-up Dennis Santana, who did not have a great night on the mound.
Santana threw three and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs while striking out four. However, Santana made up some of those runs with his bat, hitting a one-out, bases-loaded double in the first pitch saw as a big leaguer.
Even with all of the runs scored and the offense on display, we were unable to extend our Dodgers Beat the Streak hitting streaks.
I went with Enrique Hernandez, who had a favorable matchup against a southpaw at Coors Field. Hernandez went 0-4 on the night.
Sarah went with slugger Cody Bellinger, excepting his cold streak at the plate to snap with a big game at Coors Field. Bellinger did not get the start and went hitless in one pinch-hit appearance.
Sarah’s pick — Current streak 0: Justin Turner
My pick for tonight is JT. The Dodgers played some amazing baseball last night, it was the kind of game that makes you proud to be a fan. Justin Turner played a solid game last night and I predict he will again tonight.
This evening the Dodgers will send Walker Buehler to the mound. He’s never pitched in Coors Field, but he has enough experience against big league hitters so far this season that Denver may not be all that daunting.
Buehler has quickly become one of the most solid pitchers the Dodgers have and is putting himself right in the middle of the Rookie of the Year conversation. Like last night, however, the Dodgers are going to need to provide a lot of run support. Turner is definitely capable of contributing to the offense tonight, and we know he’ll be on top of his game at the hot corner.
Jason’s pick — Current streak 0: Yasmani Grandal
Yasmani Grandal is coming fresh off an off-day and is primed to have a big night at the plate for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Grandal started the season red-hot but has cooled off in the last few months, displaying the typical roller coaster level of production that Dodger fans have become familiar with.
And while Grandal may not be producing on paper, he is still working good at-bats, getting deep in the count and making solid contact with the baseball. Baseball is an unforgiving game and there are times when you don’t get the results you may deserve.
Next: It is time to swap Stripling and Hill
In Coors field, Grandal does not even have to square one up to send it into the seats. As long as he is making good contact, he should be able to find the right-center gap or put the ball into the seats.
