2016: Corey Seager

  • 2016 season: .308 AVG, 26 HR, 72 RBI, .877 OPS
  • Career prior: .337 AVG, 4 HR, 17 RBI, .986 OPS (27 games)

Ok, I am going to contradict myself a bit here. On the previous slide, I gave the nod to Chris Taylor due to the hype around Bellinger and the rather unknown nature of Chris Taylor. In 2016, though, it was the hyped up prospect in Corey Seager that emerged as the Dodgers’ best breakout star and led the team to a then fourth-straight NL West Title.

I mean, c’mon, Seager finished at an MVP finalist in his rookie season and likely would have repeated that this season if he did not have to battle a UCL injury that eventually led to Tommy John surgery.

Finishing as an MVP finalist in your rookie year is no small task and doing so as a rookie for an experienced, talented, Dodgers team is even more impressive. Plus, it helps that the Dodgers did not have many other great candidates to consider this season, as the next best breakout guy was Joe Blanton.

And Blanton was pretty good for the Dodgers. He was the second-best reliever out of the bullpen and was the most reliable arm prior to Kenley Jansen. Getting that out of Blanton, who at this point was a failed starter at the end of his career, was huge for the Dodgers.

But still, Seager’s impact was undeniable as he was easily the most important offensive piece to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016.

Honorable mention: Joe Blanton
