Los Angeles Rams NFC West Ranking: Running backs
By Jason Reed
2. Arizona Cardinals
- Running back depth chart: David Johnson, Elijhaa Penny, Chase Edmonds
The Arizona Cardinals just narrowly missed out on the top spot on this list. In fact, it was so close to call that I went back and forth for about 30 minutes on who really should be crowned the best running team in the NFC West. The Arizona Cardinals did not get the nod for a few reasons.
First and foremost, health. David Johnson is one of, if not the, most talented running backs in football. However, Johnson also missed practically all season after dislocating his wrist in week one against the Detroit Lions. While an injured wrist shouldn’t hold Johnson back from running the football, the fact that he did not play last season is a factor.
Second of all, and more importantly, is the depth behind Johnson. Johnson may be one of the best, sure, but this list is an overall ranking of the entire running back unit. Johnson alone would have been enough to carry the Carindals over most teams. However, since the Cardinals do not have that great of help behind him, they fall up just short to another elite running back.
Chances are the Cardinals are not going to need much from that running back depth to succeed at running the football next season. However, when it comes down to determining who has the best run-game, it does have an impact.
