LeBron James and LA’s biggest acquisitions of the 21st century
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Lakers signing LeBron James is the biggest LA news of the 21st century. Which got us thinking, what are LA’s biggest acquisitions since 2000?
LeBron James is the biggest signing the Los Angeles Lakers have had since the team signed Shaquille O’Neal. Not only is LeBron the biggest signing by the Lakers in some time, he also provides LA’s biggest news of the century.
It has not been a slow century for LA, either. The Lakers have won multiple titles, the Angels have won a ring, the Ducks and Kings have won rings, the Rams came home, the Chargers joined the mix, the Dodgers made the World Series and will host the 2020 All-Star Game and the Olympics were announced for 2028.
Yet still, LeBron taking his talents to the City of Angels is the city’s biggest news to date. With such a massive signing felt by everyone, we decided to take a look back at the biggest acquisitions that LA Sports teams have pulled off this century, starting with the NBA.
NBA:
Los Angeles Lakers: LeBron James (2018)
Like we said, LeBon James coming to LA is the city’s biggest sports news of this century. Trading for Pau Gasol would have been the number one acquisition for the Lakers, but you know, LeBron James.
Los Angeles Clippers: Chris Paul (2011)
The Los Angeles Clippers have been very bad for most of the franchise’s existence. Thus, when the team landed Chris Paul in 2011, it served as a major breath of fresh air. With promising young players Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, the Clippers were instantly title contenders.
And while the Clippers did not ultimately reach the promised land, Paul is responsible for the Clippers’ best stretch in franchise history.
While the process of being traded was certainly a headache, Chris Paul will go down as the best Clipper of all-time. Hopefully, the franchise can find its new GOAT that can bring a ring to the Clippers.
